Add adhd iceberg6/30/2023 Living in a world which is created for neurotypicals can create trauma, stress and anxiety and offer less opportunities for self and co-regulation (soothing experiences), more easily triggering freeze, fight, flight or shutdown responses. Rather, it is true that there is a two-way empathy problem between autistics and neurotypicals it is just that there are more neurotypicals. Just the same as for neurotypicals (NT’s), autistic people and those with autistic personality traits are as unique and varied as are trees in a forest or stones on a beach.Ī popular misconception is that autistic people lack empathy. Counselling can help you to better understand your own emotions and those of others.Īutism essentially refers to a different way of experiencing and interacting with the world. Just like with any sense, sometimes neurodivergent people can be hypersensitive to their own and/or to other people’s emotions, while at the same time not yet having the skills to manage this this can lead to distress. You might wish to work through painful/confusing experiences, share joy, work towards goals and/or improve your skills in self-regulation (feeling soothed). You might choose to seek support to manage difficult feelings and notice/value your strengths. Whether or not you or a loved one has a diagnosis, counselling can help you.Ĭounselling can help us all to better understand and accept ourselves, leading to a more fulfilling and peaceful life. Not only for Autistic people but for everyone who identifies, or think they might, as neurodivergent. I recommend the book Unmasking Autism by Devon Price. You can see my entry on the National Autistic Society’s directory here: I am not a researcher nor expert, my role is to support you to find your own answers. This page is to give you an idea of my views so you can get a feel for whether or not I could support you. I welcome all enquires, it might be helpful to know I have additional training and experience with autistic and adhd neurotypes. I am learning all the time and just like you, I am not immune to internalised ableism. My belief is that it is prejudiced and does not reflect the inner experience of those it classifies. I have studied the DSM deficit criteria, which was constructed in relation to neuro normative expectations. I work within the social model of disability this means I understand disability as being a consequence of society’s inability to accommodate difference. I understand brain differences as a mixture of biology, social/culture and psychology. This means (when consent exists) I see difference (to the majority) and deviation from neuro normative expectations as a valid, equal, welcome and an important part of the human experience. The template trended going into 2022, resurfacing on Twitter and elsewhere online.I exist and work within a neurodiversity frame.
